Join us for a free practical Ngā Poutama Matawhenua GIS/mapping online wānanga. In this 1 hour session, we’ll explore how LINZ Basemaps, topographic maps, and historical imagery can support Māori GIS mapping projects. You’ll learn how to overlay historical imagery with your own data, provide feedback on LINZ topographic maps, and integrate geospatial tools into your mahi.

This workshop also features a new StoryMap showcasing the diverse applications of imagery for Māori interests, including environmental restoration, whenua management, and storytelling providing you with real world examples, data sources and applications.

What you’ll learn

  • Access LINZ 3D Basemaps and use them as foundational layers for GIS mapping and storytelling.
  • Provide feedback on LINZ topographic maps to enhance their usefulness for Māori GIS applications.
  • Discover how to overlay the LINZ and other historical imagery sources with your own datasets to visualise change over time or explore whenua in new ways.
  • Learn about applications of imagery for Māori kaupapa, including:
    • Documenting whenua changes through time for storytelling or historical preservation.
    • Supporting iwi and hapū in planning, resource management, and cultural mapping.
    • Monitoring awa and moana for environmental restoration and kaitiakitanga.

Who should attend

  • Iwi and hapū members, Māori trusts, and marae collectives.
  • Environmental and land managers interested in geospatial tools.
  • Anyone exploring innovative ways to integrate geospatial resources with Māori interests.

This session is designed to be accessible to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced GIS users. As always to ensure this material is widely available, it will be recorded for later viewing in the Ngā Poutama Matawhenua YouTube channel
